Senior Christmas Dinner

BALLROOM BASH - Dec. 17
The city recreation department presents this month's Ballroom Bash, 7:30-10

CHRISTMAS GIFT PROGRAM - December 18, 2004
Join the Family Assistance Ministries for this wonderful Christmas event. Presents will be handed out to needy children of our community and lunch will be served. CANDY CANE CARNIVAL - December 4, 2004
Children will delight in an array of holiday activities offered by the San Clemente Recreation Division and the San Clemente Jr. Woman’s Club. The program runs from 2:30pm to 6:00pm at the Community Center with a “Candy Cane Carnival,” craft corner, game booths and a mini variety show. The program ends with the “count down” to light the Community Tree. Most activities are free. Visits with Santa during the entire event, so bring your cameras. Are you in need this Thanksgiving? Or do you know a local person or family that could benefit from this. If you do, then please join the Family Assistance Ministries, the City of San Clemente and local churches for our third annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner, held at the Community Center. Food donations and volunteers are needed to help feed and serve the less fortunate in our community. This event runs from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. This benefit 5k walk raises funds for local families in need. 100% of the proceeds goes back into the community in the form of client aid. Poetry Reading at Casa Romantica - October 27
Michelle Mitchell-Foust in an American Poet in Residence at the Poets’ House in Donegal, Ireland as well as a teacher of writing in southern California. She earned her doctorate from the University of Missoui, and her book Circassian Girl (2001) was the winner of the Elixir Prize. She is a winner of the Nation/"Discovery" award, the Columbia University Poetry Prize, the Missouri Arts Council Award, a Writers at Work Fellowship, and an Academy of American Poets Prize. Stephen Yenser’s The Fire in All Things received the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets. His other awards in poetry include the B. F. Connors Prize from the Paris Review, an Ingram Merrill Fellowship, a Pushcart Prize, and two appearances in the Best American Poetry series. Recipient of two Fulbright Teaching Fellowships and the Harvey L. Eby Award for Excellence in Teaching, he is professor of English and director of creative writing at UCLA. Admission is FREE

Poetry Reading at Casa Romantica - September 29
Donald Revell is the author of eight collections of poetry. His honors include the PEN Center USA West award, the Gertrude Stein Award, the Shestack Prize, a Pushcart Prize, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts as well as from the Ingram Merril and Guggenheim Foundations. Claudia Keelan is the author of four collections of poetry. Her honors include the Robert D. Richardson award for the best essay published by the Denver Quarterly in 1997; a 1991 fellowship from the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico; and a 1992 grant from the Kentucky Foundation for Women. SC OPEN SKATEBOARD TOURNAMENT - September 11
The San Clemente Recreation Division and the Friends of San Clemente Beaches, Parks and Recreation Foundation are co-sponsoring the 4th Annual SC Open Skateboard Tournament at the Ralphs Skate court, located at Richard T. Steed Memorial Park. This tournament is open to boys and girls ranging in age from 7 yeasrs to 17 years and adults 18 years and older. All skate partciipants, including the professional skaters for the demo are required to wear the proper safety equipment: helmet, knee and elbow pads. Other activities slated for the event are Professional Skateboard demonstrations and authograph sessions, vendor fair, food and beverages, entertainment and music, and community service information. Poetry Reading at Casa Romantica - August 25
Arthur Vogelsang is the author of A Planet (Holt, 1983), Twentieth Century Women (University of Georgia Press, 1988), Cities and Towns (University of Massachusetts Press, 1996, which received the Juniper Prize, and Left Wing of a Bird (Sarabande, 2003). He is the recipient of three National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and a fellowship from the California Arts Council. Elena Karina Byrne is a teacher, visual artist, Poetry Moderator and Consultant for the LA Times Festival of Books, and former 12 year Regional Director of the Poetry Society of America. She has served as Poetry Consultant to the Getty Research Institute (GRI) and curated the poetry reading series at The Getty Center. Elena is a seven-time Pushcart Prize nominee who has won awards from the Academy of American Poets, The Chester H. Jones Foundation and the Kudzu Poetry Prize. Admission is FREE

Poetry Reading at Casa Romantica - July 28
Patty Seyburn's second book of poetry, Mechanical Cluster, won the 2002 Ohio State University / The Journal Award in Poetry. Her first book, Diasporadic (Helicon Nine Editions, 1998) won the Marianne Moore Poetry Prize and the American Library Association Notable Book Award for 2000. Chris Abani’s novels are Masters of the Board (Delta, 1985) and GraceLand (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2004). His poetry collections include Kalakuta Republic (Saqi, 2000), Daphne’s Lot (Red Hen, 2003) and Dog Woman (Red Hen, fall 2004).Admission is FREE

SUMMER BEACH CONCERTS SERIES - Dates To Be Announced
Bringing the Bands to the Sand this 5th Annual Series of Concerts on the Beach promise to deliver a variety of music, with the sunset as your backdrop and free seating in the sand, located just north of the San Clemente Pier. BBQ dinner available on the beach for an additional cost. Enjoy a variety of different music including the local Middle School and High School Bands. SAN CLEMENTE OCEAN FESTIVAL - July 17-18   Check out the Photos HERE
The San Clemente Ocean Festival (SCOF) is a partnership event, hosted by the San Clemente Ocean Festival and the City of San Clemente. This event originated as competitions between lifeguards. In the bi-centennial year of 1976, it was decided to expand the competitions to include activities for families and friends. This is a fun, family event, with beach and water activities for everyone. FIREWORKS SHOW - July 4, 2004
Held at the San Clemente Pier each year, this event begins at dusk and is free to the public. Go early because it get's crowded!! The Fireworks can also be seen from North Beach and State Beach (off Califia).

Poetry Reading - June 30, 2004
Presented by the Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens: Allyson Shaw, a novelist and poet, edits the ezine Die Cast Garden. She has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and her work has appeared in Mudfish, Volt, Third Coast and Melic Review. Jeffrey McDaniel is an acclaimed performance poet whose work has appeared in many literary publications, including Ploughshares and Best American Poetry 1994. A noted poet, McDaniel has appeared on ABC's Nightline and NPR's Talk of the Nation. Admission is FREE

GARDEN CLUB FLOWER SHOW - April 17-18, 2004
The San Clemente Garden Club, in partnership with the City of San Clemente Beaches, Parks and Recreation Department, presents the 51st annual Flower Show at the Community Center, Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18. More than 500 entries of the area's finest flowers, plants and artistic designs by amateurs and local garden hobbyists will be judged and on display in the auditorium. The event, one of the longest running flower shows in Southern California, is enhanced by entry-friendly free registration that encourages participation by gardeners and flower enthusiasts of all ages. The public is invited to enter plants, floral arrangements and cut flowers, or just come and enjoy the hundreds of colorful entries on display. Also included are educational exhibits, junior gardening displays of creations with dried plant materials, a large plant sale and free tool sharpening.
